Mary Jo Bostick
Mary Jo Bostick, 85, of Odessa, died Monday, December 8, 2008, at Medical Center Hospital. She is the mother of Jan Reed, a Midland College retiree and part-time academic advisor/counselor, who served as MC's Director of Student Activities for many years.
Mary Jo Russel Bostick was born March 26, 1923, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, to Winnie and Lawrence Russell. The family moved to be Gatesville and later to Big Spring where Mary Jo met her husband-to-be, Alton Bostick in high school. Both attended the University of Texas until Alton was drafted into the Army in 1941. While he was away, Mary Jo worked for the Adjunct General at the Midland Bombadier Base. They married in 1943 at the First Methodist Church of Odessa. After WWII, they settled in Odessa and ran a small grocery store in West Odessa. In 1947, Mary Jo and Alton opened Bostick Roofing and Sheet Metal on 27th and Golder across from Odessa's original football stadium. Mary Jo continued to run the grocery store for a few years and then ran the company office while raising their daughters.
She lived with a smile on her face, love in her heart, and a positive attitude. Nothing made her happier than moving furniture around, playing and decorating her home. She was involved with her daughter's activities and school and loved spending time with family and friends. She belonged to a bridge club while raising her family, and was a life member of the Garden Club, often serving as an officer and traveling to Hong Kong and all over the United States. She was secretary for the Chimney Hollow Association and was active in a women's Sunday school class that became the 'Ole Timers' class at the First Methodist Church.
Mrs. Bostick was preceded in death by her infant son Alton Frankie Bostick, Jr., her husband Alton Bostick, and parents Winnie and Lawrence Russell. She is survived by her daughters Jan Bostick Reed and husband Andy of Midland, Ann Bostick Moore and husband Gary of Odessa; and grandchildren Marianne Reed Gilles and husband Danny, Rusty Reed and wife Michelle, Robert Reed and wife Christy, Molly Moore Watters and husband Steven, Kelly Moore Allgood and husband Adam; and great-grandchildren Hunter Gilles, Fischer and Emma Reed, Reed and Sloan Watters, and Allie Allgood.
