Lily Marie Carter

 

inmemory carterLily Marie Carter passed away on January 22, 2009, at the age of 88. She was born December 27, 1920, in St. Louis, Missouri, the only child of Samuel Sample Carter and Lily N. Carter.

 

Lily Marie attended the University of Missouri and earned a degree in Geology in 1943. Her academic achievements earned her membership in Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. In 1990 she created the Lily Marie Carter Endowed Geology Fund at the University of Missouri. She received a Master's degree in geology at the University of Michigan in 1947. She also attended courses at Principia College.

 

Lily Marie came to West Texas to work in the oil industry in the early 1950's. She worked as a geologist for W.W. West and the Permian Basin Sample Lab from 1953 until her retirement in 1991. She was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

 

Lily Marie never stopped learning. She loved geological field trips. She was an avid hiker, especially in the Big Bend, the Davis Mountains and the Guadalupe Peak areas of West Texas. Lily Marie traveled extensively, often on Smithsonian educational tours. She was an enthusiastic student in the College Classics program at Midland College, and could often be found at the Midland Public Library. She was also an avid fan of the Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series at Midland College.

 

She was a distinguished donor at Midland College, where her contributions benefitted the Geology Department, the Chaparral Circle Endowment Fund, and the Friends of the Series. She was a longtime member of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Midland.

 

A memorial service was held January 31, 2009, at the Dollye Neal Chapel at Midland College, on the south side of the main campus, across the street from the Marie Hall Academic Building and the Allison Fine Arts Building.
