Howell "Boots" Watkins
Howell "Boots" Watkins, former Midland College Psychology and Sociology Professor, died on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital.
He was born on April 16, 1922, in Kirkland, Texas, to Mark and Jessie (Jones) Watkins. Howell worked on the family farms in Terry County until World War II when he joined the Air Force, serving from 1943 to 1945.
He began his Methodist Ministry in the 1950's in Richards, Texas. In 1972, Howell moved to Midland, where he began teaching at Midland College and serving as a part-time Methodist minister, before retiring in 1991. He continued teaching Sociology at the Big Spring prisons and to minister at small area churches. When not teaching or ministering, Howell could be found at Sanity Acres, his farm in Greenwood, where he herded his cats and sold pecans and Christmas trees.
In the 1970's, Howell helped found the "I Can Cope" program and in recent years, was a member of the VAN Services, and served on the advisory board of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, sponsoring numerous people through their college careers.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle Ellis-Watkins of Midland; one son Ronnie Hilton Watkins; three grandchildren, Mark Allen Watkins, Reba Kelly Coplin, and Shannon Dale Watkins; nine great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
