Elsie and Nicholas C. (Nick) Dragisic

inmemory DragisicNicholas C. Dragisic (Nick) was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 1, 1920 to parents John and Mary Stepanovic Dragisic, who moved to the United States from Croatia. Nick grew up in Chicago with his three sisters and one brother.

Nick married Elsie Janos on November 7, 1941. Elsie was born on December 21, 1921 to parents Joseph and Anna Lopatkiewicz Janos, also of Chicago, Illinois, where she grew up with one sister and a brother.

Nick enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1941. He attended Bombardier school at Midland Air Field (MAF) during his training before completing 47 successful missions as a bombardier in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Nick and Elsie returned to Chicago so that Nick could complete his education at the University of Illinois. They returned to Midland in 1947, where Nick began a successful career as a CPA, including 55 years as Comptroller for O’Neill Properties, LTD.

Elsie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and, after various other health complications, passed away February 25, 2003. At that time, the family decided to set up a memorial scholarship at Midland College which would entice nursing students to become more educated regarding Alzheimer’s disease and the care of elderly patients.

Nick, Elsie and their children were members of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and, later, St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. Elsie was an avid Bridge player and gourmet cook, and Nick enjoyed swimming laps at the City of Midland Aquatic Center. Nick was also passionate about his continuing education hours in the CPA field.

Nick continued to work as Comptroller until he passed away on June 4, 2005 after a brief struggle with cancer. The Dragisic children then decided to change the Midland College scholarship to become The Dragisic Memorial Scholarship Fund and for it to be available to any qualified, deserving Midland College student.

Nick and Elsie lived in Midland for over 58 years and had eight children, eight grandchildren and many long time friends. The Dragisic families all agree that a college education is extremely important and like the idea of a memorial honoring their parents. They believe that The Dragisic Memorial Scholarship Fund will help deserving students at Midland College bless our community with an ever-expanding college, and help the community enjoy better-educated citizens.
