Clara King

inmemory kingClara King, a longtime instructor at Midland College, passed away Monday, November 12, 2007.

Clara worked as a part time accounting instructor at Midland College from 1973 to 1977 and became a full time faculty member from 1983 to 1992. In the Spring of 1992 she became the Dean of Business Studies until June 1997. Clara continued to teach accounting full time from the Fall of 1997 until her retirement on August 31, 2001. After retiring in 2001, she continued teaching part-time at Midland College, Odessa College and Lubbock Christian University.

She was an avid Midland College sports fan, especially enjoying basketball and golf. She followed MCs international golfers throughout their careers and in 1993 while a guest of a former student/golfer and his family, visited the St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland where she was privileged to tour the Royal and Ancient Golf Club normally restricted to male members only.

Clara was born October 20, 1938 to John Malcolm Gillis and Mayme Virginia Beaver Gillis in Dumas, Texas. The family lived in a number of places in Texas, and she was a graduate of Andrews High School. Clara also received a Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State, as well as a Masters degree from UTPB. She was a licensed CPA and had worked a short time in accounting, but preferred teaching. She taught accounting at Midland College for over twenty years and was the recipient of the Outstanding Accounting Educator Award for excellence in teaching and motivating students presented by the Texas Society of Public Accountants in 1994 in Nashville, Tennessee. She was very active in the accounting profession through memberships and service at the national, state, and local level of the TSCPA and Institute of Management Accountants.

Clara loved the Lord and was a remarkable steward of her exceptional gifts of leadership, service, and teaching. After her retirement from full-time teaching, she volunteered her time at the Petroleum Museum, the Bush Family Home, and Meals on Wheels. Clara also loved to travel with her friends, both nationally and internationally. On two separate occasions she taught English in Eger, Hungary.
